An outdated consumer unit (fuse board) is one of the most common reasons for an EICR coming back unsatisfactory. Here's how to know if you need an upgrade, what's involved, and what to expect in terms of cost in London.

Signs you need a consumer unit upgrade

What is an RCD? A Residual Current Device is a life-saving safety switch that cuts power within milliseconds if it detects a fault — preventing fatal electric shock. Modern consumer units must have RCD protection under BS 7671 18th Edition.

What's involved in an upgrade?

A consumer unit upgrade typically takes 4–6 hours. Our electrician will isolate the supply, remove the old board, install the new unit, reconnect all circuits, test every circuit, label the new board clearly, and issue a Part P compliance certificate — all notified to your local building authority.

Do I need planning permission?

No planning permission is needed. However, consumer unit replacement is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, meaning it must be carried out by a registered competent person and reported to the local building control authority. Energy North handles this as part of every installation.
